Metal forging is the method of manipulating metal into a certain shape. This is commonly done through one of two methods, drop forging and press forging. Drop Forging — With drop forging also called hammer forging , the metal billet is inserted into the die and hammered with multiple blows.
Are you looking to know more about Forging? Today we will study the definition, process, types, operation, defects, advantages, disadvantages, and applications of forging. Also at the end of the article, I will give you the link to download the PDF version of this article.
Open Die Forging vs. Closed Die Forging
Forging is a manufacturing process in which shape of a heated metal changed by applying external force. Heated metal is used in forging because it is much easy to reshape heated material compared to colder one. However, in many forging operations cold metal is also used. In this type of forging operation, a metal is elongated and as a result its cross-sectional area decreases. Upsetting is opposite to drawing out operation.
In upsetting cross-sectional area of the workpiece is increased and as a result length of workpiece decreased. Smith forging is the same which a village blacksmith uses for making various tools. In smith forging the heated metal gets repeated blows of hammers to get desired shape. This is the operation done in close impression dies by means of drop hammers. Here the Force for shaping is applied in several blows. Press forging is same as drop forging but, the force is applied here with the help of hydraulic machines.
The only difference in press forging and machine forging is that, in press forging material is drawn-out but in machine forging material is upset. Though the products manufactured by forging are of superior quality as compared to other manufacturing process but there are still some defects which could arise. These advantages are in comparison with other manufacturing processes. Your email address will not be published.

What is Forging Process, Operation, Types, Application, Advantages and Disadvantages?
Forging is a manufacturing process involving the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces. The blows are delivered with a hammer often a power hammer or a die. Forging is often classified according to the temperature at which it is performed: cold forging a type of cold working , warm forging, or hot forging a type of hot working. For the latter two, the metal is heated , usually in a forge. Forged parts can range in weight from less than a kilogram to hundreds of metric tons.
The maintenance cost is high.

Open die forging is the process of deforming a piece of metal between multiple dies that do not completely enclose the material. Products formed through open forging often need secondary machining and refining to achieve the tolerances required for the finished specifications. Custom shapes can also be produced with open die forging. The strength of the grain structure will be increased during the deformation process due to the repeated working of the steel billet.

Forging Process is a metal forming process in which the forces are applied on the material such that the stresses induced in the material are greater than the yield stress and less than the ultimate stress so that the plastic deformation produced in the material will be used for changing the shape of the component is called as Metal Forming Process. Forging is a Metal Forming Process in which the workpiece is heated to higher temperatures and is placed on the die work region. Now, a large amount of compressive force is applied to the workpiece with either similar die or hammers in a vertical direction so that the shape change deformation takes place.
Elaborate almost all information about forging in very easy language and systematically. It is very helpful for me. I am preparing for AMIE examination. My self confidence has increased after reading this lecture. Many Many thanks for this. Your email address will not be published.
