Cellular model

Creating a cellular model has been a particularly challenging task of systems biology and mathematical biology. It involves developing efficient algorithms , data structures , visualization and communication tools to orchestrate the integration of large quantities of biological data with the goal of computer modeling. It is also directly associated with bioinformatics , computational biology and Artificial life. It involves the use of computer simulations of the many cellular subsystems such as the networks of metabolites and enzymes which comprise metabolism , signal transduction pathways and gene regulatory networks to both analyze and visualize the complex connections of these cellular processes. The eukaryotic cell cycle is very complex and is one of the most studied topics, since its misregulation leads to cancers.

Metastasis results from a sequence of multiple steps including invasion and migration. The early stages of metastasis are tightly controlled in normal cells and can be drastically affected by malignant mutations; therefore, they might constitute the principal determinants of the overall metastatic rate even if the later stages take long to occur. To elucidate the role of individual mutations or their combinations affecting the metastatic development, a logical model has been constructed that recapitulates published experimental results of known gene perturbations on local invasion and migration processes, and predict the effect of not yet experimentally assessed mutations. A method to associate gene expression profiles with different stable state solutions of the logical model has been developed for that purpose. In addition, we have systematically predicted alleviating masking and synergistic pairwise genetic interactions between the genes composing the model with respect to the probability of acquiring the metastatic phenotype. We focused on several unexpected synergistic genetic interactions leading to theoretically very high metastasis probability.

Mathematical biology aims at the mathematical representation and modeling of biological processes , using techniques and tools of applied mathematics. It can be useful in both theoretical and practical research. Describing systems in a quantitative manner means their behavior can be better simulated, and hence properties can be predicted that might not be evident to the experimenter. This requires precise mathematical models.

This, to a certain extent, was dictated by the descriptive nature of biology at that time.
