Urban and regional planning is a spatial design practice that brings limitations to the intervention in natural areas to ensure a balance between population growth, housing, and employment in residential areas.
This book discusses urban planning and regional development practices in the twentieth century, and ways in which they are currently being transformed. It addresses questions such as: What are the factors affecting planning dynamics at local, regional, national and global scales? With the push to adopt a market paradigm in land development and infrastructure, the relationship between resource management, sustainable development and the role of governance has been transformed. Centralized planning is giving way to privatization, not only in the traditional regions but also in newly emerging regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The Master of Urban and Regional Planning MURP degree program is nationally recognized by the Planning Accreditation Board ; our alumni enjoy competitive starting salaries in a wide variety of fields across the United States and the world. The primary goal of the MURP degree is to facilitate the development of technical skills and intellectual qualities necessary for students to meet the broad and varied range of problems associated with urban and regional development. It is intended that, upon completion of graduate study, that students should be able to enter the profession as competent practitioners and be able to learn and improve throughout his or her career so as to respond to the changing needs of society and the profession. This program has a Strategic Plan. We strive to help students develop basic knowledge of the history and theory of planning, presentation techniques, legal and administrative procedures and their applications, and technical skills in survey, research and analysis of the structure and growth of communities.
The Urban and Regional Planning program equips students for entry-level positions in planning allied fields and prepares them for graduate studies in fields such as Urban Planning and Land Development. The core curriculum, designed to equip students with knowledge and skills to deal effectively with the opportunities and challenges inherent in the development, growth and culture of neighborhoods, cities, and regions, is based on theoretical training in the natural, physical, and social sciences. Students acquire skills that enable them to apply these theories to develop communities, cities, and regions which are safe, healthy, and sustainable. Critical thinking and analytical skills are emphasized for problem-solving at the community and regional scale. Classroom service-learning experiences enable graduates to more reliably and realistically assess complex community problems, design solutions for overcoming those problems, and evaluate the outcomes of programs and policies in meeting community and regional needs.

Urban planning , design and regulation of the uses of space that focus on the physical form, economic functions, and social impacts of the urban environment and on the location of different activities within it. Because urban planning draws upon engineering , architectural , and social and political concerns, it is variously a technical profession, an endeavour involving political will and public participation, and an academic discipline. Increasingly, the technology of geographic information systems GIS has been used to map the existing urban system and to project the consequences of changes. In the late 20th century the term sustainable development came to represent an ideal outcome in the sum of all planning goals. The modern origins of urban planning lie in a social movement for urban reform that arose in the latter part of the 19th century as a reaction against the disorder of the industrial city. Many visionaries of the period sought an ideal city, yet practical considerations of adequate sanitation, movement of goods and people, and provision of amenities also drove the desire for planning.
Urban planning , also known as regional planning , town planning , city planning , or rural planning , is a technical and political process that is focused on the development and design of land use and the built environment, including air, water, and the infrastructure passing into and out of urban areas , such as transportation , communications , and distribution networks and their accessibility. Sustainable development was added as one of the main goals of all planning endeavors in the late 20th century when the detrimental economic and the environmental impacts of the previous models of planning had become apparent. Similarly, in the early 21st century, Jane Jacob 's writings on legal and political perspectives to emphasize the interests of residents, businesses and communities effectively influenced urban planners to take into broader consideration of resident experiences and needs while planning. Urban planning answers questions about how people will live, work and play in a given area and thus, guides orderly development in urban, suburban and rural areas. Urban planning is a dynamic field since the questions around how people live, work and play changes with time. These changes are constantly reflected in planning methodologies, zonal codes and policies making it a highly technical, political, social, economical and environmental field. Urban planning is an interdisciplinary field that includes Civil Engineering , architecture , human geography , politics , social science and design sciences.

The undergraduate program in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Cal Poly Pomona aims to develop verstaile planners with a creative problem-solving orientation. Students learn about the environmental, social, and economic processes affecting the city and region; the means by which planners work within those processes to guide direct urban and regional growth and change; the techniques used by planners in the identification and analysis of problems; and the development of solutions to these problems. Substantial field work allows students to put lessons learned in the classroom to the test of real-life experience.
Urban and regional planning is essential to the development of the communities around us — especially in and around cities and densely populated areas. People in these roles are responsible for developing policies and systems that create the physical and economic infrastructure that supports diverse and growing populations. In doing this, they must effectively manage resources and plan for current and future needs of the population. A certificate program is one way to get the necessary training to be able to do this. And good news: As an urban and regional planner, your job outlook will be positive for years to come.
