Sections on the archaeoastronomy of South Asia and South East Asia have been expanded, with original photography and new research on temple alignments in Southern India, and new material describing the astronomical practices of Indonesia, Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. With the rapid pace of discovery in astronomy and astrophysics, entirely new perspectives are emerging about dark matter, inflation and the future of the universe. This book is not written to reinvent the wheel and offer up just another introduction to Buddhism.

British Broadcasting Corporation Home. This article examines Buddhist concepts of the universe, life and reincarnation, suffering and human existence. The great tragedy of existence, from a Buddhist point of view, is that it is both endless and subject to impermanence, suffering and uncertainty. These three are called the tilakhana or three signs of existence. Existence is endless because individuals are reincarnated over and over again, experiencing suffering throughout many lives. It is impermanent because no state, good or bad, lasts forever.

Spreading from India to Central and Southeast Asia , China , Korea, and Japan , Buddhism has played a central role in the spiritual, cultural, and social life of Asia , and, beginning in the 20th century, it spread to the West. Ancient Buddhist scripture and doctrine developed in several closely related literary languages of ancient India, especially in Pali and Sanskrit. In this article Pali and Sanskrit words that have gained currency in English are treated as English words and are rendered in the form in which they appear in English-language dictionaries. Exceptions occur in special circumstances—as, for example, in the case of the Sanskrit term dharma Pali: dhamma , which has meanings that are not usually associated with the term dharma as it is often used in English. Pali forms are given in the sections on the core teachings of early Buddhism that are reconstructed primarily from Pali texts and in sections that deal with Buddhist traditions in which the primary sacred language is Pali.

Buddhist Cosmology: Philosophy and Origins

There is no single system of Buddhist cosmology. Virtually every theological tendency within the Buddhist tradition addressed the cosmological sciences from its special perspective — seeing the universe as the stage for a drama of salvation cast in terms of its own particular philosophical and theological predilections. The single-world system that is particularly prominent in the oldest Buddhist texts pictures the cosmos as a flat disk with heavens and meditation realms above and hells below. Although the oldest tradition apparently limited its interest to a single-world system, a grandiose cosmic structure developed on the perimeter of this single universe. Traces of themes associated with multiple-world systems appear in texts of the Pali canon. At the core of each of these cosmologies is a drama of salvation. It is this drama of salvation, implicit in all the Buddhist cosmologies, that allows for the integration of the scientific and theological bases of these cosmologies, represented in images of motion and light.

Buddhist cosmology is the description of the shape and evolution of the Universe according to the Buddhist scriptures and commentaries. It consists of temporal and spatial cosmology: the temporal cosmology being the division of the existence of a 'world' into four discrete moments the creation, duration, dissolution, and state of being dissolved; this does not seem to be a canonical division, however. The existence of world-periods moments, kalpas , is well attested to by the Buddha. The historical Buddha Gautama Buddha made references to the existence of aeons the duration of which he describes using a metaphor of the time taken to erode a huge rock measuring 1x1x1 mile by brushing it with a silk cloth, once every century , [3] and simultaneously intimates his knowledge of past events, such as the dawn of human beings in their coarse and gender-split forms, [4] the existence of more than one sun at certain points in time, [5] and his ability to convey his voice vast distances, [6] as well as the ability of his disciples who if they fare accordingly to be reborn in any one of these planes should they so choose. The picture of the world presented in Buddhist cosmological descriptions cannot be taken as a literal description of the shape of the universe. It is inconsistent, and cannot be made consistent, with astronomical data that were already known in ancient India. The cosmology has also been interpreted in a symbolical or allegorical sense for Mahayana teaching see Ten spiritual realms.
