Mom & Me & Mom - Chapters 3 - 4 Summary & Analysis

Maya Angelou's latest memoir tells of getting to know the mother whom she first called 'Lady' rather than 'Mom. May 13, Angelou and her brother were separated from their mother for many of their early years, living with their grandmother while their mother struggled with her marriage. Angelou told the Huffington Post that she realized recently how supportive her mother was of her. Fiona Sturges, a writer for The Independent , was also impressed. Already a subscriber? But now, at last, the legendary author shares the deepest personal story of her life: her relationship with her mother. For the first time, Angelou reveals the triumphs and struggles of being the daughter of Vivian Baxter, an indomitable spirit whose petite size belied her larger-than-life presence - a presence absent during much of Angelou's early life. When her marriage began to crumble, Vivian famously sent three-year-old Maya and her older brother away from their California home to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. The subsequent feelings of abandonment stayed with Angelou for years, but their reunion, a decade later, began a story that has never before been told.

Maya Angelou: 'Mom & Me & Mom' explores a powerful mother-daughter dynamic

Mom & Me & Mom

The book was published shortly before Mother's Day and Angelou's 85th birthday. It focuses, for the first time in her books, on Angelou's relationship with her mother, Vivian Baxter. The book explains Baxter's behavior, especially Baxter's abandonment of Angelou and Angelou's older brother when they were young children, and fills in "what are possibly the final blanks in Angelou's eventful life". After Baxter helps her through the birth of her son, Angelou goes from calling Baxter "Lady" to "Mom". At the same time she made a deliberate attempt to challenge the usual structure of the autobiography by critiquing, changing, and expanding the genre.
