Transforming the Pediatric Experience: The Story of Child Life
In this program, students are equipped with specialized training to respond to the developmental, social, and emotional needs of hospitalized children and their families. They learn to mitigate the impact of medical trauma while preserving basic developmental pathways and family support systems in hospitals and medical community settings. Graduates of the program receive an MA in education. The program meets the academic standards of the Association of Child Life Professionals, and graduates may apply for the child life specialist certification, provided they meet the Child Life Council's eligibility requirements. Course work prepares students to help children manage stressful and potentially traumatic medical experiences by integrating theory and practice. Some classes focus on the hospitalized child and include relevant fieldwork.

By Richard H. Thompson , Gene Stanford. With a Foreword by Jerriann Myers Wilson. Child life services include providing emotional support, structuring therapeutic play programs, psychologically preparing children for medical procedures, enhancing the hospital environment, and acting as the child's and parents' advocate.
During the past century, child life programming has evolved into a standard of care for children experiencing life's most challenging events. From pediatric outpatient clinics and dentists' offices to funeral homes and courtrooms, children are now being provided access to professionals that relieve the anxiety and fear associated with emotional and physical pain. Child life programming plays an integral role in addressing the psychosocial concerns across the health care continuum and should be included in all general pediatric provider settings as a standard of quality care for young patients. Throughout the past few decades, there has been a rapidly expanding body of research in the neurobiological and behavioral sciences documenting the tremendous importance of optimal growth and development in the early years, not only for the child's later health and success as an adult, but also for the well-being of society. At the same time, it was becoming clear that the conditions for most children around the world, especially in a hospital setting, fell short of what medical science recommended.
