Wuthering Heights is a notable work by Emily Bronte. Despite being a tragic and dark novel, it is full of engaging characters. Heathcliff is an innocent kid who has lived a difficult life till Mr Earnshaw picks him up.

Was Heathcliff a “dark” and “evil” character in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights.

Aaliya Pathan. Published in , it is regarded as a classic tale of jealousy, vengeance and passion. Heathcliff, the protagonist of Wuthering Heights , is well-known as a romantic hero, due to his undying love for Catherine. However, in the second half of the novel, he is nothing more than a man driven by revenge; a villainous character seeking to gain control by manipulating those around him.

But can this really be considered as the workings of an evil man? Or is it the end product of an uncaring, brutal, capitalist society? Arguably, one can also say that Heathcliff was a misunderstood character who treated the world the same way he was treated. Identity and otherness can be defined by a number of aspects like religion, social status, language, race and appearance. Heathcliff has no identity. Before his metaphorical birth in the Earnshaw family, he just happened to be a gypsy foundling discovered on the streets of Liverpool.

Heathcliff may have lived in Wuthering Heights, but he did not belong there and Hindley made that apparent whenever he could. His race and lack of social status are the main reasons for their reactions. This provokes Hindley because he views Heathcliff as an intruder in the family and believes that he should be treated better than Heathcliff.

When Mr. Hindley would not only verbally abuse Heathcliff but do so physically and mentally as well. Hindley boasts about his higher social status and does everything to remind Heathcliff about his lower status. He treats him like a servant and deprives him of education and burdens him with hard labour. As a child, Heathcliff falls madly in love with Catherine Earnshaw. The two of them are inseparable and Catherine even goes so far as to say that they are the same person.

She becomes more aware of her social status and starts viewing Heathcliff as others do. When Catherine meets Heathcliff again after her five weeks of absence, it is evident how different the two are in terms of their social status. As the tale progresses, Heathcliff transforms from a victim into an oppressor and is determined to make Hindley pay.

He gets his revenge on Hindley by escaping the moors and acquiring a mysterious fortune. By lending Hindley money that he cannot pay back, Heathcliff, in turn, ends up owning Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff released his hate for Hindley on his son Hareton. He abused young Hareton and prohibited him from receiving an education.

As a result, Hareton grew up as a barbarian; he behaved rudely and was ill-mannered. He treats her in such a way that she is forced to flee the house. However, marriage to Isabella was only the first step of his revenge. This would give him access to Thrushcross Grange and help him climb upward in the social hierarchy.

It is also clear that the complex issues of social class and race had a strong impact on Heathcliff and, in many ways, his revenge was not aimed at particular people in so much as it was directed against their class and race.

After all, it was these differences in status that caused them to mistreat him and prompted Catherine to leave him in favour of Edgar. Whether Heathcliff can be called a victim or villain is a matter of perception. While we can all sympathise with his childhood, it is hard to ignore how his desire for revenge negatively affected everyone around him, including, his son. At the same time, we have to acknowledge the role social class and race played in shaping Heathcliff and his future actions.

Heathcliff’s character from Wuthering Heights

A sensible man ought to find sufficient company in himself. Appreciation for solitude is what separates the people who live at Wuthering Heights from the civilized, quiet world of the Lintons and Thrushcross Grange. In fact, the characters who most like to be alone——Heathcliff, Catherine Earnshaw, and Hindley——are also the characters who are most in touch with their own passionate emotions, for better or for worse. Ellen's early admonition evokes specific incidents in the novel——from Lockwood's disastrous first encounter with Heathcliff, to his eventual decision to move to London because he can no longer bear the unpleasant atmosphere of the moors. However, it also reflects the extreme insularity of this society more generally. The novel focuses on two families, the Earnshaws and the Lintons, and the people in these families only interact socially with their servants and with each other. The introduction of Heathcliff——a "foreigner," both in the sense that he is not from the moors, and in the sense that he is not ethnically English——proves to be a violent disruption to this isolated society.

He is ' dark' AND 'EVIL' in all sense. He moves out of his noble christian norms of living and mannerisms. He falls into gambling and alcoholism. And with his strong determination for revenge, he also lived with a motive to unsurp all the properties of both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.

In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff turned to underhanded due to all the triumph and misuse he needed to proceed with Catherine's sibling and furthermore with Edgar. Despite the fact that Hindley put him through bunches of hopelessness, Heathcliff had the option to suffer it in view of his energetic love for Catherine.
