Knowing what makes groups tick is as important as understanding individuals. Successful managers learn to cope with different national, corporate, and vocational cultures.

This article examines the way the ancient Greeks conceived of the emotions. Special attention is paid to the differences between classical Greek and modern English conceptions, in line with the view that culture plays a significant role in shaping the way emotions are experienced. Also considered are changes in the way the emotions are understood in early Christian and later texts, with occasional reference to Latin adaptations. In particular, the emotions of pity, anger, fear, love, and jealousy are examined in detail. Keywords: affect , emotion , pity , anger , fear , love , jealousy.

Labelling perspective ; Labelling theory. The labelling perspective emerged as a distinctive approach to criminology during the s and was a major seedbed of the radical and critical perspectives that became prominent in the s. It represented the high point of an epistemological shift within the social sciences away from positivism — which had dominated criminological enquiry since the late s — and toward an altogether more relativistic stance on the categories and concepts of crime and control. It inspired a huge amount of work throughout the s and s and still resonates powerfully today. This short entry maps out some of the ways in which labelling, deviance, media, and justice interact at the levels of definition and process. It presents an overview and analysis of key mediatized labelling processes, such as the highly influential concept of moral panics.

Artificial intelligence and robotics is pervasive in daily life and set to expand to new levels potentially replacing human decision-making and action. Self-driving cars, home and healthcare robots, and autonomous weapons are some examples. A distinction appears to be emerging between potentially benevolent civilian uses of the technology eg unmanned aerial vehicles delivering medicines , and potentially malevolent military uses eg lethal autonomous weapons killing human combatants. Machine-mediated human interaction challenges the philosophical basis of human existence and ethical conduct. Aside from technical challenges of ensuring ethical conduct in artificial intelligence and robotics, there are moral questions about the desirability of replacing human functions and the human mind with such technology. How will artificial intelligence and robotics engage in moral reasoning in order to act ethically?

Conscience is a cognitive process that elicits emotion and rational associations based on an individual's moral philosophy or value system. Conscience stands in contrast to elicited emotion or thought due to associations based on immediate sensory perceptions and reflexive responses, as in sympathetic central nervous system responses. In common terms, conscience is often described as leading to feelings of remorse when a person commits an act that conflicts with their moral values. An individual's moral values and their dissonance with familial, social, cultural and historical interpretations of moral philosophy are considered in the examination of cultural relativity in both the practice and study of psychology. The extent to which conscience informs moral judgment before an action and whether such moral judgments are or should be based on reason has occasioned debate through much of modern history between theories of modern [ clarification needed ] in juxtaposition to the theories of romanticism and other reactionary movements after the end of the Middle Ages. The diverse ritualistic, mythical, doctrinal, legal, institutional and material features of religion may not necessarily cohere with experiential, emotive, spiritual or contemplative considerations about the origin and operation of conscience. Conscience, as is detailed in sections below, is a concept in national and international law, [4] is increasingly conceived of as applying to the world as a whole, [5] has motivated numerous notable acts for the public good [6] and been the subject of many prominent examples of literature, music and film.

Hitting back at the European Commissioner for Justice and Fundamental Rights who had sharply reprimanded the French government for the campaigns against illegal Roma camps, he did not care to hold back his anger. Reding had obviously touched a raw nerve. It was already quite something that a commissioner had voiced severe criticism against a member state by accusing France of violating EU regulations and conducting a disgraceful policy. Furthermore, she had referred to the spectre of Vichy France and the wartime round-ups of Jews to draw a parallel with the present-day treatment of gypsies. This upset the French president.

Emotions in History – Lost and Found

Attention is the basis of the most essential of leadership skills—emotional, organizational, and strategic intelligence. And never has it been under greater assault. If leaders are to direct the attention of their employees toward strategy and innovation, they must first learn to focus their own attention, in three broad ways: on themselves, on others, and on the wider world.

Justice is one of the most important moral and political concepts. The word comes from the Latin jus , meaning right or law. But philosophers want to get beyond etymology and dictionary definitions to consider, for example, the nature of justice as both a moral virtue of character and a desirable quality of political society, as well as how it applies to ethical and social decision-making. This article will focus on Western philosophical conceptions of justice.

Was willst du.
