Intelligent Autonomous Systems pp Cite as. The present chapter deals with the issues related to design and development of autonomous mobile robots. One of the major issues in developing an intelligent and autonomous robot is to design an appropriate scheme for planning its motion without any human intervention. Both conventional potential field method as well as soft computing-based approaches have been developed for the said purpose. Initially, the performances of all the approaches have been studied through computer simulations. Thereafter, real experiments are conducted to test the effectiveness of the said approaches. A camera-based vision system has been used to collect information of the environment, while carrying out the real experiments.

We have a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community with expertise in unmanned vehicles, ranging from underwater vehicles to high altitude vehicles and rotary winged aircraft. We are developing new ways in which we can design robotic platforms, including making use of advanced additive manufacturing technologies and designing for reduced environmental impact. We also have research activities in the design of automated control systems with the goal of enhancing the real-world usability of robotic systems through enabling beyond visual line of sight operations. Robotics and artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionise the way we observe the environment from the seafloor to space and we are at the forefront of this research. It can bring a step change in the way we monitor our infrastructure, our cities and our crops and it may change the way in which we move goods and people around the globe.
