Postcolonialism , the historical period or state of affairs representing the aftermath of Western colonialism ; the term can also be used to describe the concurrent project to reclaim and rethink the history and agency of people subordinated under various forms of imperialism.

Positivist critiques include Marxist and neo-Marxist approaches and certain "conventional" strands of social constructivism. Postpositivist critiques include poststructuralist , postcolonial , "critical" constructivist, critical theory in the strict sense used by the Frankfurt School , neo-Gramscian , most feminist , and some English School approaches, as well as non-Weberian historical sociology , [1] " international political sociology ", " critical geopolitics ", and the so-called " new materialism " [2] partly inspired by actor—network theory. All of these latter approaches differ from both realism and liberalism in their epistemological and ontological premises.

Introducing Postcolonialism in International Relations Theory

At the heart of postcolonial studies are insights regarding the centrality of colonialism to social, political, and economic relations, representations of the Global South, the construction of identities and postcolonial subjectivity, the coeval nature of East-West relations, the ties between knowledge and power, epistemic violence, the importance of provincializing Europe in the humanities and the social sciences, and the ethics and politics involved in postcolonial theorizing. Although these insights have long opened up new vistas of research in a range of disciplines, much of International Relations IR has—until recently—remained immune not only from them, but also from the pointed and important questions raised regarding how and why it was possible that the Global South and important areas of international history like colonialism and the violent encounters between the West and the rest of the world have been mostly absent from the empirical and theoretical work of the discipline. As a result of this marginalization, the existing literature within International Relations that incorporates and draws on insights from postcolonial theory in an explicit manner is currently characterized more by breadth and variety in empirical and theoretical focus rather than by specific debates and conversations. Nevertheless, it is now possible to discern several general thematic areas in this small but growing body of literature. These areas include the importance of colonialism in the development and evolution of the international system, and its social structures, rules, and norms, the relationship between discourse and power in the representations and construction of identities, and the role of race, class, gender, and sexualities in the making of hierarchies. Finally, issues related to ontology, epistemology, and methodology are also a significant part of research in postcolonial IR.

Download your free copy here. Postcolonialism examines how societies, governments and peoples in the formerly colonised regions of the world experience international relations. Rather, it highlights the impact that colonial and imperial histories still have in shaping a colonial way of thinking about the world and how Western forms of knowledge and power marginalise the non-Western world. Postcolonialism is not only interested in understanding the world as it is, but also as it ought to be. It is concerned with the disparities in global power and wealth accumulation and why some states and groups exercise so much power over others. By raising issues such as this, postcolonialism asks different questions to the other theories of IR and allows for not just alternative readings of history but also alternative perspectives on contemporary events and issues. This hierarchy is centred not on striving for a more equal distribution of power among peoples and states but on the concentration of power.


This chapter examines postcolonial approaches to International Relations IR and their foregrounding of the history and politics of colonialism in the making of the modern world. It first considers the concerns, issues, and preoccupations highlighted by postcolonial theory, along with some of the central debates that have shaped its intellectual terrain, and the normative and political commitments that distinguish it from other related fields such as Marxism and poststructuralism. It then discusses the relevance of postcolonialism to the study of international relations and proposes three different ways of engaging with the insights of postcolonial theory within IR that open up new questions, alternative methodologies, and a range of possibilities for narrating a postcolonial IR. Finally, it analyses international concerns about Iran's nuclear weapons programme from a postcolonial perspective.

This conversation draws out the personal, social, political and intellectual contexts in which a generation of IR scholars came to re-engage the field with the study of race and racism.
