Despite the fact that sometimes circumstances appear very similar, there are often wide variations in the level of proficiency attained in a second language, even by students in the same class. Some students become fairly skilled in a relatively short time while others appear to barely grasp the rudiments of the target language. These differences in proficiency occur even though most individuals learn their own language quite successfully with no apparent effort. Over the years, there has been considerable research conducted to determine reasons for these differences, and many characteristics of individuals have been hypothesized to play a role in accounting for this diversity. These characteristics have included a number of general factors such as age, gender, and various personality attributes, as well as a host of variables that are more directly specific to the task of learning another language.

How, then, is success in SLA so prevalent? Their research interests include psycholinguistics, language acquisition and linguistic pragmatics. The editors and the contributing authors are active members of many scientific committees and organizations devoted to the investigation of language acquisition processes, and they regularly participate in many conferences and publish extensively. The author list comprises experienced scholars as well as young and promising researchers. His major field of interest is linguistic pragmatics, psycholinguistics and language of persuasion. He has published two books on advertising language, Deciphering Radio Commercials — A Pragmatic Perspective and Theoretical Frameworks in the Study of Press Advertisements — Polish, British and Chinese Perspective , as well as a number of articles on the topic. This book should be of great use for teachers who intend to take individual learner features into consideration in language classrooms as well as researchers who pursue further empirical evidence on IDs.

Individual learner differences and language learning strategies

This special issue addresses the subject of individual learner differences in second language learning, a topic whose complexity has meant little conclusive knowledge and thus need for continuing investigation. This paper offers a brief but broad overview of the field of individual differences in language learning, especially as they are reflected in learning styles, learning strategies, and affective variables. But how does a teacher go about teaching them the language skills so that they become more interested in the language? Also how does a teacher maintain their interest in second language learning when it is not seen as important for their immediate needs other than to pass examination? All forms of language teaching could be greatly improved if teacher had a better understanding of the language learner and of the language learning process itself. It is essential to recognize that there are individual differences between learners.

Second-language acquisition SLA , sometimes called second-language learning — otherwise referred to as L2 language 2 acquisition , is the process by which people learn a second language. Second-language acquisition is also the scientific discipline devoted to studying that process. The field of second-language acquisition is a sub-discipline of applied linguistics but also receives research attention from a variety of other disciplines, such as psychology and education. A central theme in SLA research is that of interlanguage : the idea that the language that learners use is not simply the result of differences between the languages that they already know and the language that they are learning, but a complete language system in its own right, with its own systematic rules. This interlanguage gradually develops as learners are exposed to the targeted language. The order in which learners acquire features of their new language stays remarkably constant, even for learners with different native languages and regardless of whether they have had language instruction. However, languages that learners already know can have a significant influence on the process of learning a new one.

Individual Differences and Second Language Learning

A generation after Lee Cronbach and Richard Snow widely publicized the need for and potential of aptitude-treatment interaction research, we finally have a volume that does justice to this topic in the field of second language learning. It provides numerous ideas for future research, from broad hypotheses to test, to areas of language to focus on, to statistical techniques for data analysis. For anybody interested in how individual differences interact with L2 learning conditions, this book is not just interesting, it is exciting and inspiring. In all the chapters I was impressed by the tone of respect and genuine scholarly debate as authors engaged with previous and current researchers whose theories and findings often differed from their own.
