What Are Human Rights? It is the General Assembly that ultimately votes to adopt human rights declarations and conventions , which are also called treaties or covenants. Other UN Bodies In addition to the General Assembly, in which all member states are represented, there are five other main bodies of the United Nations that deal with different types of international concerns and administrative tasks. This council of fifty-four members elected by the General Assembly is responsible for coordinating all economic and social work of the UN and its affiliated institutions. It has responsibility for initiating and drafting human rights declarations and conventions. ECOSOC also supervises intergovernmental organizations IGOs , which are specialized agencies that function independently with their own charter, budget, and staff but are affiliated with the UN by special agreements. Human rights are fundamental to its programming.

The principal organs and subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Secretariat are included under the regular budget of the United Nations, as authorized by the General Assembly. Other agencies of the UN system, however, have their own regular budgets or are financed solely from voluntary contributions. These latter two categories, moreover, possess a certain degree of autonomy. Most organizations were established when the United Nations itself came into being, others are considerably older.
In an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world, some issues are too big for countries to handle on their own. Countries need to work together, and they do so in part through international organizations that encourage cooperation and diplomatic resolutions to global problems. This is an introduction to six of the most important international organizations in the world today. All were established after World War II. Many of these organizations are discussed in detail under other Global Era topics such as trade, terrorism, and global health. As the issues tackled on a global level evolve, international institutions need to adapt. The WTO is being criticized for not updating its rules to meet the needs of new technological developments; and concerns abound over the jurisdiction of the ICC.
The UN System Organizations
Historically, a sixth main organ, the Trusteeship Council , played a significant role in the process of decolonization. The Trusteeship Council suspended its operations in and is no longer active, but it cannot be formally dissolved without amending the UN Charter. Brief descriptions of the UN's main organs are provided below, along with links to their respective websites.
The Charter allowed for the creation of any other entities that were seen as required. Since its creation, the United Nations is now considerably larger, encompassing numerous specialised organisations and agencies, programmes and funds, training and research bodies as well as other service providers. There are also numerous subsidiary bodies, including committees, commissions, boards, councils, panels, and working groups some of which this list includes.
