In the recent years, multidrug-resistant bacteria have become a global threat, and phage therapy may to be used as an alternative to antibiotics or, at least, as a supplementary approach to treatment of some bacterial infections. Here, we describe the results of bacteriophage application in clinical practice for the treatment of localized infections in wounds, burns, and trophic ulcers, including diabetic foot ulcers. This mini-review includes data from various studies available in English, as well as serial case reports published in Russian scientific literature with, at least, abstracts accessible in English. Since, it would be impossible to describe all historical Russian publications; we focused on publications included clear data on dosage and rout of phage administration. Phage therapy , viral phage therapy , or phagotherapy is the therapeutic use of bacteriophages to treat pathogenic bacterial infections. Phages are often compared to antibiotics. Phages tend to be more successful than antibiotics where there is a biofilm covered by a polysaccharide layer, which antibiotics typically cannot penetrate. Because phages replicate in vivo in cells of living organism , a smaller effective dose can be used. This specificity is also a disadvantage: a phage will kill a bacterium only if it matches the specific strain. Phages are currently being used therapeutically to treat bacterial infections that do not respond to conventional antibiotics, particularly in Russia  and Georgia. Phage therapy has many potential applications in human medicine as well as dentistry, veterinary science, and agriculture.
Emerging antibiotic resistance is one of the most important microbiological issues of the 21st century. This poses a query regarding the future use of antibiotics and availability of other promising therapeutic alternatives. The awareness about antibiotic misuse has improved insufficiently and is evident by the increased incidences of multidrug resistant infections globally.
