Margolis, Pragm Margolis on Realism and Idealism.

How to Compare & Contrast Idealism and Realism in Philosophy

These key ideas of realism should seem very familiar. Realism is the mainstream everyday view within Western cultures and the mainstream scientific view. In contrast, idealism is the view that the physical universe is like a dream created by consciousness. It is in consciousness, just as a dream is. We have an individual dream at night; we have a shared dream during the day.

Political Realism in International Relations

I contend that these writers ground their interpretations of international relations on a shared paradigm that has hitherto gone largely unrecognised. Following a critique of certain widely held views of IR Idealism, I draw attention to a number of aspects or themes in this body of writing in an attempt to establish the underlying paradigm. I argue that the authors in question were familiar with the type of thinking that later came to be called Realist, but held that industrial modernisation rendered it increasingly anachronistic and dangerous. The crucial difference between Idealism and Realism is in their respective theories of history. In order to understand Idealist IR thinking, it is essential to realise the extent to which it relies on the notion, not so much of progress as is usually asserted as of an inescapable, directional historical process.

Difference Between Idealism and Realism

Idealism , in philosophy , any view that stresses the central role of the ideal or the spiritual in the interpretation of experience. It may hold that the world or reality exists essentially as spirit or consciousness , that abstractions and laws are more fundamental in reality than sensory things, or, at least, that whatever exists is known in dimensions that are chiefly mental—through and as ideas. Thus, the two basic forms of idealism are metaphysical idealism, which asserts the ideality of reality, and epistemological idealism, which holds that in the knowledge process the mind can grasp only the psychic or that its objects are conditioned by their perceptibility. In its metaphysics , idealism is thus directly opposed to materialism —the view that the basic substance of the world is matter and that it is known primarily through and as material forms and processes. In its epistemology , it is opposed to realism , which holds that in human knowledge objects are grasped and seen as they really are—in their existence outside and independently of the mind.

In the discipline of international relations there are contending general theories or theoretical perspectives. Realism, also known as political realism, is a view of international politics that stresses its competitive and conflictual side. It is usually contrasted with idealism or liberalism, which tends to emphasize cooperation. Realists consider the principal actors in the international arena to be states, which are concerned with their own security, act in pursuit of their own national interests, and struggle for power. National politics is the realm of authority and law, whereas international politics, they sometimes claim, is a sphere without justice, characterized by active or potential conflict among states.

German Idealism

Both idealism and realism, as philosophical terms, deal with the relationship between our minds and the world. Idealism is the view that things exist only as ideas, with no reality as material objects outside of the mind. Realism is the view that objects exist in themselves, independently of our consciousness of them. Realism asserts two fundamental things about the world: first, that objects outside of our mind have existence; second, that objects outside of our minds are independent from our minds, that is, that facts about these objects are true or false regardless of our opinions or beliefs. Idealists reject the idea that objects are independent of our minds. Idealism was a major force in German philosophy from the s to the s.

Philosophically, realism and idealism comprise opposing approaches to the definition and pursuit of national objectives abroad.
